James Barrett, Head of Healthcare at Arch Insurance International shares the three main areas in which we underwrite business within the healthcare space, plus our approach to doing business with our broker partners.
At Arch, we underwrite in three main areas within the healthcare space, with our key territory being the US where we write clients in all 50 states and Puerto Rico.
The first and largest group of our clients is hospitals and health systems, covering a range of clients including rural community hospitals, large metropolitan standalone facilities, regional systems, and some of the largest multi-state systems in the U.S.
We will underwrite all types of hospitals from general acute care to university teaching, paediatric or more specialist facilities. The key criteria is that our clients should have a willingness and an ability to maintain a significant self-insured retention.
The second area we focus on is long-term care. We tend to focus on larger risks located in more challenging jurisdictions, with for-profit ownership. We target multi-location including multi-state risks.
Typical structure would be coverage of $1 million per claim, a $3 million per facility annual aggregate, and a larger policy aggregate. Our limits will attach above a self-insured retention of no less than $100,000 each and every, potentially with a buffer or loss corridor as well. We also consider excess layers for long-term care clients. Our ideal clients will have a track record of managing a self-insured retention, either with their own personnel or using the services of an experienced TPA.
The third area we underwrite is physician business. We consider this on an excess only basis, typically above a domestic primary insurer who provides limits on a per physician basis, or a meaningful self-insured retention. Our clients tend to be larger groups, for example comprising 100 physicians or more, ideally working at a limited number of locations in a specific geographic region.
