Flood resilience this winter

Risk Management

Flooding is one of the biggest threats UK businesses and homeowners face when it comes to property risk. A solid insurance policy will help with the financial fallout, but it won’t bring back lost sales, fix a disrupted operation, or repair a damaged reputation on its own. Genuine resilience starts long before a flood happens, it’s about limiting the damage in advance rather than just picking up the pieces afterward.

Why timing matters

The changing seasons bring a specific challenge. Ground that’s been dry for an extended period doesn’t absorb water well, which means heavy downpours are far more likely to run straight off the surface and cause flooding. As extreme weather becomes more common, flood resilience is no longer just something for the facilities team to think about. It’s a business-critical issue.

This makes it a good moment to take stock of your exposure, either on your own or alongside your broker.

Steps worth taking right away

Small, proactive actions now can significantly reduce the impact when severe weather strikes:

  • Review or update your flood risk assessment
  • Keep gutters, drains and watercourses free of debris
  • Check that sump pumps work and your emergency procedures are current
  • Relocate essential equipment to higher ground, above expected flood levels

Look into Property Flood Resilience (PFR) measures if they’re relevant to your premises

Resilience isn’t limited to bricks and mortar. A strong business continuity plan should also address backup operating locations, secure data storage (whether off-site or in the cloud), and a clear communication strategy for staff, customers and suppliers if things go wrong.

Taking these steps seriously can limit how severe a loss or business interruption turns out to be, and it gives underwriters a clearer picture when assessing risk.

Questions to ask yourself

  • How recently was your flood risk assessed?
  • If you suddenly couldn’t access your premises, could the business keep running?
  • What could you put in place now, before the next major storm arrives?

Looking at the wider picture

Insurance plays a crucial role in getting back on your feet financially, but it shouldn’t be your only line of defence. Businesses that build resilience into their planning now tend to bounce back faster and safeguard their future.

Would you be ready for a flood tomorrow, or just insured against it?
